Often unseen and underestimated, mangroves are nature’s engineers. Their tangled roots hold the shoreline together, filter seawater, capture carbon, and provide shelter for countless marine species. These coastal guardians remind us that strength doesn’t always roar sometimes, it anchors silently beneath the waves.
This July, in honor of World Mangrove Day (July 26th), Eco Tourism Bali steps into action alongside Suparma Tbk, Luisa, and Daniel to restore this vital ecosystem. At the heart of this movement is Ekowisata Mangrove Batu Lumbang, located within the 1,373-hectare Tahura Ngurah Rai conservation area in Denpasar. Here, 1,000 mangrove seedlings—Rhizophora apiculata and Rhizophora mucronata—were planted. These two species were chosen for their powerful role in building resilience along the coastline:
-Rhizophora apiculata thrives in soft, muddy ground and anchors the soil to prevent erosion.
-Rhizophora mucronata forms dense root systems that buffer storms and nurture marine life.
But this story is not only about trees, it’s about people and purpose.
A special highlight of this month’s initiative is the heartfelt gesture from Luisa & Daniel, who integrated mangrove planting into their wedding celebration. Through the Regenerative Bali Program, a mangrove tree was planted in honor of each of their guests, turning a moment of love into a living legacy for Bali’s coastlines. As stated in their message:
“Just as our love grows deeper, this tree will thrive and support the beautiful ecosystem around it.”
In the South of Bali, ETB works closely with local community that guards a 48-hectare mangrove conservation zone, is home to 47 local families who have long lived in harmony with the ecosystem. Under the leadership of I Wayan Pasek Pastika, the area is now a model for eco-tourism where community livelihood and conservation go hand in hand.
This is what regenerative tourism looks like. It’s not about doing less harm, it’s about doing more good. It’s not just planting trees; it’s planting hope, healing, and a future where culture and nature thrive together.
As July unfolds, may the quiet labor of mangrove roots inspire us all: to anchor in purpose, grow with intention, and stand strong together for Bali, for the planet, and for generations to come. (SSB)
